Review: Between the Devil and the Deep Blue Sea (Between #1)

Happy first day of September! I absolutely cannot believe that it is already September. I could swear that it’s still June! I hope everyone had an enjoyable summer!<3
School is starting back up for me next week, so unfortunately my reading will be slowing down quite a bit until Christmas time, but I’m certainly going to squeeze in as many more books as I possibly can before then!
Today I’m bringing you a review of what has to be one of my most anticipated reads, Between the Devil and the Deep Blue Sea! Unfortunately, this book was not all that I had dreamed of, especially after building it up for so many years.
Hope you enjoy!

Between the Devil and the Deep Blue Sea by April Genevieve Tucholke
Genre: Young Adult – Romance, Paranormal
Series: Between #1
Pages: 360
Publication Date: August 2013
My Rating: 2 of 5 stars
Read July 2021

Goodreads Synopsis:
You stop fearing the devil when you’re holding his hand…
Nothing much exciting rolls through Violet White’s sleepy, seaside town… until River West comes along. River rents the guest house behind Violet’s crumbling estate, and as eerie, grim things start to happen, Violet begins to wonder about the boy living in her backyard.
Is River just a crooked-smiling liar with pretty eyes and a mysterious past? Or could he be something more?
Violet’s grandmother always warned her about the Devil, but she never said he could be a dark-haired boy who takes naps in the sun, who likes coffee, who kisses you in a cemetery… who makes you want to kiss back.
Violet’s already so knee-deep in love, she can’t see straight. And that’s just how River likes it.
Blending faded decadence and the thrilling dread of gothic horror, April Genevieve Tucholke weaves a dreamy, twisting contemporary romance, as gorgeously told as it is terrifying—a debut to watch.

Review: Layla

Good afternoon!! I hope you’re all doing well.
Today I’m here with a review of my third Colleen Hoover read, Layla, which was just published in December. I really enjoyed the other Colleen Hoover books that I read before this, but Layla was quite the disappointment for me.
Happy reading! ❤

Layla by Colleen Hoover
Genre: Adult – Mystery/Thriller, Romance, Paranormal
Pages: 301
Publication Date: December 2020
My Rating: 2 of 5 stars
Read December 2020

Goodreads Synopsis:
From #1 New York Times bestselling author Colleen Hoover comes a novel that explores life after tragedy and the enduring spirit of love.
When Leeds meets Layla, he’s convinced he’ll spend the rest of his life with her—until an unexpected attack leaves Layla fighting for her life. After weeks in the hospital, Layla recovers physically, but the emotional and mental scarring has altered the woman Leeds fell in love with. In order to put their relationship back on track, Leeds whisks Layla away to the bed-and-breakfast where they first met. Once they arrive, Layla’s behavior takes a bizarre turn. And that’s just one of many inexplicable occurrences.
Feeling distant from Layla, Leeds soon finds solace in Willow—another guest of the B&B with whom he forms a connection through their shared concerns. As his curiosity for Willow grows, his decision to help her find answers puts him in direct conflict with Layla’s well-being. Leeds soon realizes he has to make a choice because he can’t help both of them. But if he makes the wrong choice, it could be detrimental for all of them.

Review: Twilight

Happy Monday! I hope you’re all having a wonderful day!
Today I’m back with a review of a book that I had never planned on picking up, but for whatever reason, I finally did. I wouldn’t say that I regret it, but I didn’t exactly enjoy the book all that much either.
Happy reading!! 😉

Twilight by Stephanie Meyer
Genre: Young Adult – Paranormal, Fantasy, Romance
Series: Twilight #1
Pages: 501
Publication Date: October 2005
My Rating: 2 of 5 stars
Read September 2020

Goodreads Synopsis:
About three things I was absolutely positive.
First, Edward was a vampire.
Second, there was a part of him—and I didn’t know how dominant that part might be—that thirsted for my blood.
And third, I was unconditionally and irrevocably in love with him.
Deeply seductive and extraordinarily suspenseful, Twilight is a love story with bite.

Review: From Blood and Ash (Blood and Ash #1)

Good evening and happy Sunday!! I hope you all enjoyed your weekend. ❤
Today I’m back with a review for what has got to be my most disappointing read of the year, perhaps even my life, and that is my favourite author, Jennifer L. Armentrout’s latest release, From Blood and Ash.
Happy reading!! 😉

From Blood and Ash by Jennifer L. Armentrout
Genre: New Adult – Fantasy, Romance
Series: Blood and Ash #1
Pages: 634
Publication Date: March 2020
My Rating: 2 of 5 stars
Read July 2020

Goodreads Synopsis:
Captivating and action-packed, From Blood and Ash is a sexy, addictive, and unexpected fantasy perfect for fans of Sarah J. Maas and Laura Thalassa.
A Maiden…
Chosen from birth to usher in a new era, Poppy’s life has never been her own. The life of the Maiden is solitary. Never to be touched. Never to be looked upon. Never to be spoken to. Never to experience pleasure. Waiting for the day of her Ascension, she would rather be with the guards, fighting back the evil that took her family, than preparing to be found worthy by the gods. But the choice has never been hers.
A Duty…
The entire kingdom’s future rests on Poppy’s shoulders, something she’s not even quite sure she wants for herself. Because a Maiden has a heart. And a soul. And longing. And when Hawke, a golden-eyed guard honor bound to ensure her Ascension, enters her life, destiny and duty become tangled with desire and need. He incites her anger, makes her question everything she believes in, and tempts her with the forbidden.
A Kingdom…
Forsaken by the gods and feared by mortals, a fallen kingdom is rising once more, determined to take back what they believe is theirs through violence and vengeance. And as the shadow of those cursed draws closer, the line between what is forbidden and what is right becomes blurred. Poppy is not only on the verge of losing her heart and being found unworthy by the gods, but also her life when every blood-soaked thread that holds her world together begins to unravel.

Review: After (After #1)

Good evening!! Yesterday I finished reading After, and oh my goodness, what an experience that was. This book has very polarizing opinions, but I randomly decided to give it a go.  It was certainly something.
This was also the second book that I read for The Reading Rush. It fulfilled the prompt of reading and watching a book to movie adaption and reading an author’s first novel.
On with the review; I hope you enjoy! 😉

After by Anna Todd
Genre: Young Adult / New Adult– Contemporary, Romance
Series: After #1
Pages: 582
Publication Date: October 2014
My Rating: 2 of 5 stars
Read July 2019

Goodreads Synopsis:
Tessa is a good girl with a sweet, reliable boyfriend back home. She’s got direction, ambition, and a mother who’s intent on keeping her that way.
But she’s barely moved into her freshman dorm when she runs into Hardin. With his tousled brown hair, cocky British accent, tattoos, and lip ring, Hardin is cute and different from what she’s used to.
But he’s also rude—to the point of cruelty, even. For all his attitude, Tessa should hate Hardin. And she does—until she finds herself alone with him in his room. Something about his dark mood grabs her, and when they kiss it ignites within her a passion she’s never known before.
He’ll call her beautiful, then insist he isn’t the one for her and disappear again and again. Despite the reckless way he treats her, Tessa is compelled to dig deeper and find the real Hardin beneath all his lies. He pushes her away again and again, yet every time she pushes back, he only pulls her in deeper.
Tessa already has the perfect boyfriend. So why is she trying so hard to overcome her own hurt pride and Hardin’s prejudice about nice girls like her?
Unless…could this be love?

Now newly revised and expanded, Anna Todd’s After fanfiction racked up 1 billion reads online and captivated readers across the globe. Experience the Internet’s most talked-about book for yourself!
There was the time before Tessa met Hardin, and then there’s everything AFTER… Life will never be the same.

Have you read After? Did you enjoy it? Have you read the other books in the series? Does it get any better?
Did you watch the movie? I personally found the movie to be better than the book because Hardin was less mean and abusive and Tessa was less annoying. They were also both more mature. What did you think?
Let me know in the comments down below!
Also, if anyone read the original and the published edition, please let me know which characters are which members of One Direction because I’m super curious to know!!

That’s all I’ve got for today! Thanks for joining me and have a great week, everybody!
