Quote Corner #9: Splintered

Happy Tuesday! I hope you’re all staying safe and healthy!! ❤
Today I am sharing some of my favourite quotes from Splintered  by A. G. Howard!!
Hope you enjoy! 😉

He’s a contradiction: taut magic coiled to strike, gentleness at war with severity, a tongue as sharp as a whip’s edge, yet skin so soft he could be swathed in clouds.

Raising one hand, he tilts his hat to that sexy slant. “You want me. Admit it.”
Even if he’s partly right, I’ll never tell him. “Why would I want you?”
He lifts three fingers to countdown. “Mysterious. Rebellious. Troubled. All those qualities women find irresistible.”
“Such an optimist.”
“My cup is never empty.”
“Too bad your brain is.” The words bite, but my smile softens with affection.

Morpheus reaches out to catch a teardrop on his fingertip. He holds it up in the pale glow that radiates from the few remaining sprites above us. A curious frown curves his lips. “You cry for him yet bled for me. One must wonder which is more powerful. More binding. I suppose we shall one day know.”

“I hate you.”
“Only because of the way I make you feel.”
My fingernails eat into my palms. “Only because you bring out the worst in me.”
“Oh no, luv. I bring out the life in you.”

We turned to find Morpheus standing there with enough rage in his black eyes to send the Devil packing for heaven.

“Sometimes a flame must level a forest to ash before new growth can begin. I believe Wonderland needed a scouring.”

I shake my head, eyes clamped tightly. “We’re too high … it makes my stomach kick.”
He laughs and inhales a puff off the hookah then blows the smoke over me, saturating me in the comforting scent. “That’s how you know you’re alive, Alyssa. The kicks.”

“No one knows what he or she is capable of until things are at their darkest.”

I love this series so much! It is such an underrated trilogy. The plot and world building were very well done, I loved (most) of the characters, and the writing style was to die for. The first quote here honestly remains to be one of the prettiest things that I have ever read.
I read this trilogy so long ago and reread the first book via audio-book last year, and it is definitely still one of my favourites! Its a very dark and spin on Alice in Wonderland that I would highly recommend to anyone who enjoys a good fairy tale retelling or a fascinating urban fantasy romance!
And good God, I haven’t even mentioned Morpheus. My, oh my, don’t even get me started on him. He is such a complex, fascinating, and attractive character that you simply can’t help but fall in love with. I would still consider him to be one of my top book boyfriends. ❤
On top of all of that, these covers are stunning! This series is truly the most beautiful that I have even come across, between the gorgeous covers and the coloured ink used for the text inside. These are actually the only novels that I’ve seen with coloured ink, but I wish more publishers would make use of it – it takes the physical beauty of a book to a whole ‘nother level!
A. G. Howard has since written a few more YA retellings, which I am so excited to read! I’m hoping to get to RoseBlood, a retelling of The Phantom of the Opera soon!! 🙂

First Lines Fridays #8

Good morning and happy Friday to you all! I hope this week has treated you well. Today I’m back with another First Lines Friday, this time featuring a book from one of my favourite series.
Hope you enjoy! 😉

First Lines Fridays is a weekly feature for book lovers hosted by Wandering Words.
What if instead of judging a book by its cover, its author or its prestige, we judged it by its opening lines?

My art teacher says that a real artist bleeds for her craft, but he never told us that blood can become your medium, can take on a life of its own and shape your art in vile and gruesome ways. I shove my hair over my shoulder, puncture my forefinger with the sterilized safety pin I had tucked in my pocket, then position the final glass gem on my mosaic and wait. As I press the translucent bead into the wet white plaster, I shudder at the seeping sensation. It’s like a leech at the tip of my finger where I touch the glass, sucking and siphoning my blood to the underside of the gem, forming a pool of deep, velvet red.

And the book is…… Continue reading “First Lines Fridays #8”

Review: Splintered (Splintered #1)

Splintered by A. G. Howard
Genre: Young Adult – Romance, Fantasy, Retellings
Series: Splintered #1
Pages: 371
Publication Date: January 2013
My Rating: 4.5 of 5 stars
Read April 2015 & January 2019 (re-read)

Goodreads Synopsis:
Alyssa Gardner hears the whispers of bugs and flowers—precisely the affliction that landed her mother in a mental hospital years before. This family curse stretches back to her ancestor Alice Liddell, the real-life inspiration for Lewis Carroll’s Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland. Alyssa might be crazy, but she manages to keep it together. For now.
When her mother’s mental health takes a turn for the worse, Alyssa learns that what she thought was fiction is based in terrifying reality. The real Wonderland is a place far darker and more twisted than Lewis Carroll ever let on. There, Alyssa must pass a series of tests, including draining an ocean of Alice’s tears, waking the slumbering tea party, and subduing a vicious bandersnatch, to fix Alice’s mistakes and save her family. She must also decide whom to trust: Jeb, her gorgeous best friend and secret crush, or the sexy but suspicious Morpheus, her guide through Wonderland, who may have dark motives of his own.
